Seth Eklund, Executive Director, grew up in Central Los Angeles, the son of Lutheran Pastor and Middle School Teacher, who both served in South LA for over 30 years. Graduating from Loyola High School and then UCLA, he first joined Bresee, 20 years ago, in 1996 as Education Coordinator, later becoming Director of the Literacy team. In 2001, Seth & his wife resigned to take a two-year honeymoon trip around the world, visiting 24 countries. He returned to Bresee in 2003 as Director of the Education & Career Development team, helping design the Goals for Life leadership program, the annual Youth Film Festival on Social Justice, and implementing Bresee’s restructured afterschool program. Seth was appointed Executive Director in June of 2009. In the last eight years, he has helped reconstitute and grow Bresee’s Board of Directors, establish an Advisory Council, and grow individual giving. He lead the organization through its first strategic plan in over a decade in 2011 leading to new mission and vision statements, an overhaul of programming focused on impact, a new staffing structure, and a revised focus on serving both youth and families. During his tenure, Bresee has grown its budget from $1.4 million to $2.6 million, expanding its services as the Lead Gang Prevention Provider for the Mayor’s GRYD program in the Olympic Zone in 2012, and again expanding as the lead Family Services provider for the Wilshire FSC in 2016. A life long learner Seth has committed himself to continuing professional growth participating in Annenberg Alchemy, as a City Scholars Foundation Fellow, and currently as a participant in Edna McConnell Clark Foundation’s Propel Next California Cohort. A native Angeleno, and now living only a few miles away from Bresee’s Community Center, Seth has a vested interest in improving the community in which he is raising his own two children, Enzo & Aria.
